Wheatgrass has well over a hundred vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and enzymes when juiced properly.  It is one of a few super amazing completely natural foods that fully supports the body.  Many don't enjoy the taste of it, as it does taste quite a bit like grass, which it is.  Here's our favorite recipe for a sparkling wheatgrass juice cocktail that delivers the greatness of wheatgrass while turning it into a energizing and refreshing beverage.

rajas at the farm!

It is Rajas season on Be Love Farm!

Today we have several volunteers here and I am so grateful that my BIG batch of bread ( first since finishing a weekend long Baguette class at SF Baking Institute) is going to be done in time for our community lunch! Rajas (fire roasted chilis and onions with fresh artisan bread) sounds yummy!

It is an interesting time of year.  We call it Spring and yet it is unusual to have rain this late into the year, and it is unprecedented for the Vacaville area to be this cold! So while the lettuce and kale love it, the peppers, melons and cucumbers are calling for warmer days along with the ripening cherry crop!

We still need campfires in the early morning and evenings, and yesterday and today kept it going all day long. Easter Baby chicks are now healthy young birds loving the out of doors. They have already been introduced to sprouts! A real treat for all our farm chickens. They LOVE the wheatgrass and sprout trays, and follow me wherever I go when they hear my little tractor and wagon coming their way. (They know sprouts are inside the wagon!)

Mulberries are on the trees but also need more sunshine to ripen. Our neighbors who have farmed here for over 40 years say they have never seen the weather as it is this year. So as farmer, we adjust, we trust and we let go.

The baby chicks are here!  We picked them up with the Grandchildren and shared all about the miracle of receiving Special Breeds in the mail. The man at the post office was so precious about handing over the box to Kate. She said when we returned to the farm, “This is my best day ever!” I love the lessons that children can learn living on a farm! 

Tomato plants are in the ground, and we are keeping our fingers crossed for no more heavy frost. The greenhouse tomatoes now have golf ball sized tomatoes! Love the early start we got this year with the new greenhouse. Starts are abundant in the greenhouse and Lindsay is doing a great job of balancing mothering a small child, Newe, and keeping up with all the sprouts, wheatgrass and plant starts too!

Cacao, one of our Dexter cows, is pregnant and due in July.  We can’t wait to have a baby calf on the farm. The grandchildren are looking forward to that as well. Leche, our other Dexter, just returned from two months on the farm where we purchased her and we are hoping she is bred as well and will calf in December or January.

At Cafe Gratitude, we hear miraculous stories every day.  While bartending at the Berkeley Cafe last week, I happened to meet Dave, a handsome man with rugged hands and sparkling eyes.  A professional Over-The-Road "Big Rig" driver by trade, he had just come off of a day long trip, and was simply radiating joy to be in the Cafe.  A coworker of mine swung by to tell me that Dave juices wheatgrass with an extension cord at gas stations as he travels, and also carries a blender in his cab.  Intrigued, I began to pull him a double-shot of his favorite elixir while he told me his story.

In 2008, Dave weighed 430 lbs and had been diagnosed with colon cancer, type II diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and failing kidneys.  He was on a host of medications, and doctors thought that he would soon need to go on dialysis and go on the kidney transplant list.  Luckily, Dave met two people who introduced him to raw foods, and put him on a diet that allowed him to transform his life.  He sat before me, alive, joyous and invigorated, as he told me how after just 4 days of his new diet, he was able to go off all of his diabetes medications.  A year and a half later, he stood before me, 230 lbs lighter, both kidneys intact, and the spirit of gratitude lighting up his being.

Notice what you are focusing on at the moment.  Now, find something in the moment to be grateful for.  Now, observe where your attention is, and find something else to be grateful for.  Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat...

Dave began doing this meditation on gratitude during his long hours on the road.  The longest he has ever practiced “Gratitude Rocks” was 9 hours!
