About our Food

Café Gratitude serves a menu of 100% organic, 100% vegan, local fare.  Our food is free of refined sugar, flour, and additives.  We have an extensive menu of raw foods and have recently expanded to serve cooked foods in many of our locations. We create all of our own food -from the produce bin to your plate - so we can avoid serving certain common allergens like wheat, soy, and peanuts. Over 45% of our produce comes from our Be Love Farm, and the compost from our Cafes is returned to the farm to nourish the next meal.

“What are raw foods and what are their benefits?”

Raw foods or ‘live’ foods are those that have not been exposed to temperature above 105F (depending on how strict a person is, up to 118F).  This preserves the full enzymatic and nutrient content of foods from degradation, which occurs when food is heated.  Enzymes are responsible for digesting food once it is in your stomach.  ‘Live’ foods with active enzymes can digest themselves, leaving less work for your body to do, and leaving you vibrant and full of energy.  Enzymes also facilitate every metabolic process that takes place in your body, from cell reproduction and repair to energy management and immune system function.  Cooking food can degrade between 70 and 100% of the active enzymes in food.  A well-balanced, vegan, raw diet contains the full complement of vitamins and minerals necessary for good nutrition while also eliminating the physical stress caused by calorie-dense, nutrient-poor cooked foods, preservatives and additives commonly found in them.  Plenty of research has been done on the health benefits of raw foods (see sources). Raw food diets are known to assist in the recovery of various diseases such as diabetes, chronic fatigue disorders, immune system deficiencies, and cancer.

“Is Café Gratitude Gluten Free?”

Café Gratitude offers the most gluten-free options of any vegetarian restaurant in the bay.  We serve a full selection of gluten-free desserts, raw and cooked entrees, raw breads, and more.  We do serve wheat-containing beers and an entrée item (I am Magical) that is accompanied by a baked, sprouted wheat bun.  We work hard to keep our gluten-free items from cross-contamination; our central kitchen facility is entirely gluten-free.  If you are sensitive to gluten cross-contamination, please inform your server so that we may serve you with our utmost attention.

“Is Café Gratitude Soy Free?”

We offer an extensive soy-free selection, especially for a vegan restaurant!  We only use three soy ingredients: Soy lecithin used in trace amounts to thicken our desserts, raw miso, and wheat-free tamari, all of which are used to flavor some of our food items.  The soy-containing items on our menu are clearly marked and in many cases, a simple substitution can be made.

Always inform your server of allergies when ordering, so that we can ensure your safety and well-being when dining with us.
